A peer network of discipline-specific academics and students in the Science and Health field has been established across all four Institutes. The TEAM project also aims to facilitate dialogue among stakeholders about what it is we want student to learn in laboratory sessions and how our assessment can facilitate this. It aims to develop a framework for applying the principles of effective assessment and feedback to practical assessment. The Technology Enhanced Assessment Methods (TEAM) project led by Dundalk Institute of Technology and partnering with Institute of Technology Sligo, Athlone Institute of Technology and Institute of Technology Carlow is exploring the potential offered by digital technologies to address these concerns. In terms of student progression and retention, the assessment structure has been identified as having a significant impact on student engagement. The Irish Institute of Technology sector, in particular, develops these skills and considers them essential for ‘professionally ready’ graduates. These laboratory sessions focus on the skills acquisition. In science, health and engineering, the laboratory sessions are at the core of the learning process for skill development. The objective of this project is to assess the use of technology to enhance the assessment of laboratory sessions in Science and Health. This is a cross institution project involving four Institutes of Technology in Ireland. ![]() Subsequently, not only are teaching academics expected to produce teaching materials, develop courses, modules, curricula, policy documents, vast accreditation submissions, teach both online and external, as well as produce and deliver internal and face-to-face content, meet the high regulatory standards set by the professional bodies in addition to those set by the University, prepare students to succeed in writing a difficult external entrance to the profession exams, attend several meetings per week as well as sit on numerous committees, engage in professional development and be involved in professional committees external to the University, they are also expected to write research grant proposals to seek research monies, tender documents, journal articles, book chapters and books, as well as completing their own Masters or PhD should they also be studying. According to Lee and Boud "of the recent changes in higher education, it is arguably the expectation for all academics to undertake research that has generated the greatest threat, as well as some of the greatest opportunities for change". Research and publication output, once the domain of a select few, are now expected for all academics.
